Adel Sawaqid

Adel spent his childhood and coming of age in the country of Jordan. He was influenced during those years by the immense culture and history of the Country, the ancient symbols and artistry, and of course the people, both native and those who came to see one the land that was once at the heart of empires, kingdoms, dynasties and civilizations. Dell, as he has been referred to since leaving Jordan, has always revered and enjoyed the arts, but it wasn’t until he came to the United States in his early twenties that his admiration of art developed into adoration and passion for art.
Having had no formal artists training, Dell was able to allow himself to be inspired by his dreams to create. His dreams were closely tied to the inner struggle of himself, a struggle he describes as the continual suppression of his alter ego. “I expose my darker thoughts on my canvas, things I can’t express in life, things that don't fit in the norms of culture and society.” Painting, drawing and sketching became the outlet for Dell that allowed him to convey his abstract thinking in a freeing form, a form with no restriction to thought and concept, thus the true path to his inner self.
Dell's work has been inspired by many artists, most notably Jackson Pollock, Wassily Kandinsky and Salvador Dali. Their influences come through most clearly through Dell’s surrealism and abstract works. One of the methodologies Dell employs in painting is the use of large wood boards which he lays flat on the ground allowing him to move freely around the wood slab. His finished work shows the depth of underlying emotions and surrealism of thought through the layers of colors and brush strokes.
